Abstract |
The report investigated funeral rites and the impact of changes in the funeral rites of the Yo ethnic group at Saeng Badan and Bak Villages, Tambon Saeng Bandan, Somdet District, Kalasin Province. It was found that the rites were similar to those of the Tai ethnic group. However, certain aspects of the rites were unique to the ethnic group. Certain rituals were conducted at funerals for those younger than ten years, for youths, or for monks.
The rites were an ethnic tradition handed down from generation to generation. In the age of technology, the lifestyle and funeral rites of the ethnic group have changed accordingly. For instance, traditionally young men carried coffins to the cemetery, but nowadays a hearse is used instead. Changes in conducting funeral rites of the ethnic group are regarded as a loss of its conventional wisdom or traditions which are part of its ethnic identity.
