Abstract |
The Plow Karen ethnic group in three provinces adopted the Mon culture in terms of script and writing system as their own and followed Buddhism as their belief system. Furthermore, the group also embraced the date system and calendar of the Mon culture – using seven-day system and naming days based on the Mon language. Dates in the lunar system are influenced by Buddhism. Months are named according to a special event happening in a particular month. The zodiac signs were adopted from the Chinese system. The ethnic group has socio-economic activities, almost all year round, following ten months of labor use, and the ethnic public holidays are based on their annual traditions. Consequently, dates of the ethnic group facilitate the implementation of development projects by outsiders where projects were implemented during the ethnic public holidays, so that they could be beneficial to all concerned parties.
