Abstract |
This report investigates the prevalence of methamphetamine in a Karen community in Mae Sawan Noi area, Tambon Mawe Ho, Mae Sariang District, Mae Hong Son Province, by comparing the prevalence with Mae Tho Village, Tambon Bo Salee, Hot District, Chiang Mai Province. It was revealed that the prevalence was related to a new economic system that relied on external marketing. The economic change from subsistence to a modern economic system was the major factor for the Karen to abuse the drug (Abstract). Growing cabbage as a cash crop three times a year required a large amount of labor for soil preparation, seeding, and harvest (pp.39-40). The study found that a need for more income, lack of knowledge about the drug, easy access to the drug, and the ethnic personality were major causes for the drug abuse. To solve this problem, it was recommended that local officials in the four ministries must collaborate to disseminate relevant knowledge to the community (Abstract).
