Abstract |
The Tai Yuan in Sikhiu is a group of Tai Yuan living in Northeastern Thailand. There is no evidence of their migration, but there is just hearsay about the shaman of Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw. Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw is as a spirit the house and community and is an ancestor’s spirit whom the Tai Yuan in Sikhui worship. The rituals based on Shamanism of Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw are an integration of the beliefs of the ancestor’s spirit and Buddhism. These rituals are closely related to the ways of life of Tai Yuan in Sikhui. These rituals also take many role and functions in Tai Yuan society as a means to persuade the people in the society to live morally. Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw, as a spirit of house and community, rules his people as a father rules his children; in the mean time, this belief combines the Tai Yuan in Sikhiu to be united due to their same historical and ethnic roots. Because Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw’s importance, the Tai Yuan in Sikiu hold an annual feast for Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw which is performed on day 6 of the 6th month. In this annual feast, there are offerings for the spirits, and celebrations and performances in Tai Yuan style such as Tai Yuan dancing and the sword dance. Because of these, the traditions and rituals based on the shamanism of Po-Pya-Si-Kiaw, and the rituals of their belief, have been related to the ways of life of the Tai Yuan in Sikhiu until now.
