Abstract |
Mien (Yao) is a hilltribe ethnic group which has a unique lifestyle and has accumulated and passed down ethnic wisdom in terms of beliefs, customs, traditions, and dress assimilating them into their unique culture. This investigation analyzed contents, roles, belief processes, livelihoods, wisdom, and occupational skills of the Mien at Pa Klang Village, Pua District, Nan Province, with a focus on rituals that are in line with this ethnic contexts and lifestyle. Details of the rituals reflect the values of their livelihood and their beliefs are reflected via the importance of their community, respect of the elderly, collective community work, interdependent rituals, and sharing among relatives. The belief system about ancestors’ spirits and supernatural power is reflected through appeasement rituals for their ancestors’ spirits, deities, and supernatural entities. Additionally, the rituals are an expression of the relationship between man and nature through respect of nature and the environment, creating interdependence and co-existence between the two without overexploitation of nature. The author closely participated in the rituals of the community as well as recorded oral accounts of the villagers. There are eight rituals that are strictly performed by the community members. They include Hwe Mien, Xip Mien, Hwe Tau, Hwe Lung, Jiew Be Ya Won, Xip Or Mien, Thim Mien Khu, Kwa Dang, Jo Sung Ja, and Jo Xin respectively.
