Abstract |
This Karen community has a long history as well as unique traditions and norms. Knowledge and wisdom has been passed down orally. Tales and lullabies are intertwined with wisdom of social practices. Boys and girls are cultured by their parents. Thread dyeing with natural substances has been a long tradition or practice among Sgaw Karen women at Huay Khom Village, Tambon Mae Yao, Muang District, Chiang Rai Province. This investigation examines the folk wisdom, a process of knowledge transfer and creation of new knowledge by carrying out an experiment on dyeing threads with natural substances derived from local herbs and vegetables. The experiment also covers the quality control of the dyeing process, production processes, management as well as the marketing of products. Today, natural dyes cannot be collected from the forest. However, the Karen , who were subjected to this study, used substances from herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees grown or available in their community. The dyes were purely natural products. This project was a career promotion for the elderly and unemployed women in the community. It also created new brightly colored products. This knowledge could be passed down to future generations.
