Abstract |
This investigation focused on factors influencing the ethnic group to convert from a combination of Buddhism and animism to Christianity of the Lisu at Pa Tung village # 5 in Tambon Ban Pong, Wiang Pa Pao district, Chiang Rai province. It was found that the main factor influencing the conversion of the ethnic group was illness. When they fell ill as Buddhists (animists), they had to spend a lot of money to buy sacrificial items to appease spirits. After becoming Christians, they did not have to worry about making spirits angry or displeased, because God could then protect them from evil spirits. This was the main factor converting the villagers to become Christians. This work further explored the ethnic traditions and rituals and the impact of the conversion on them as well as on their lifestyle.
