Abstract |
Hand-woven textiles of the Lao Khrang are unique and expresse a long-held wisdom as well as culture and lifestyle of the ethnic group. Additionally, it has preserved a lot of important historical evidence of the group. For instance, the Lao Khrang group migrating from Phu Khang Mountain Range in Luang Phrabang in the Thonburi Period retained a unique weaving culture. The dye is mainly derived from shellac. The dyeing process is conducted only once and the yarns are woven into cloth by using hand-operated looms. Their designs are culturally unique to the group. Presently, social trends have changed and the dyeing process has also been changed. Artificial dyes are used instead of those from shellac because they are easily available and last longer. Moreover, traditional designs have also been changed or even disappeared due to the social trend that focuses on commercial weaving.
