Abstract |
The investigation revealed that sanitation practices of the Sea Gypsies were below standard, because they consumed water from the Adang Waterfall without boiling it, burned their garbage and emptied their bowels in the forest. Due to this unsanitary behavior, mosquitoes and rats were major vermin in their community. Additionally, the Sea Gypsies did not carry out a pre-natal practice and deliveries were conducted by trained midwives. The investigation provided an overview about the health problems of this nomadic group to concerned agencies in order to plan for and solve the problems (pp. 37-41).
Initially, when a person fell sick without any known cause and could not be cured by modern medication, a shaman would use herbs and black magic to cure him. In serious cases, patients would be immediately sent to the provincial hospital (p. 28).
