Abstract |
The ritual of Bun Kam Fa has been practiced up to the present time to preserve the identity of the Lao Phuan as an ethnic group. It is also a fertility rite. It is here that the social organization of the village, as a rice growing village can be observed. Their livelihood has very much been subjected to unpredictable natural phenomena i.e., rain. It also reflects the organization of kinship which is of matrilineal descent and further strengthened through the practice of matrilocal resident. In the ritual, one can also observe the mixed beliefs of Animism, Brahmanism and Buddhism as is found in other villages in Thailand. Finally, the other function of the ritual is to help consolidate the bonds and relationships of the villagers to unite them as an ethnic group.
