Abstract

The author investigates the lifestyle during the New Year Festival of the White Hmong at Khek Noi Village, Phetchabun Province, which has the highest concentration of White Hmong in the country, and the festival is celebrated by everyone. The ethnography and participatory observation methods were used to collect the data on their traditions, culture and lifestyle during this festival. The work is presented in a chronological narrative form with daily rituals and activities so that it is easy for readers to follow and get the overview of the event.
It starts by explaining the calculation of the Hmong calendar and major activities to prepare for the New Year. There are two types of activities. Firstly, the activities related to their religion, rituals and beliefs, such as the killing of animals for sacrifice, paying respects to gods and ancestors’ spirits, and auspicious times. The Hmong also believe that bad things will be taken away with the old year and life starts afresh with the new year. Secondly, the activities are related to festivities and fun. New Year is the time for relaxation and pleasure after working for the whole year and every community member will come back to celebrate no matter where they live. It is also the time to look for a soul mate and everyone will wear their best clothes and accessories. Young Hmong also pay respect to their elderly group members. It is the best time to perceive their social structure.
The author indicates that their lifestyle is related to their belief. When religious ceremonies end, it is also the end of New Year. Everyone goes back to work and to lead their normal lives with luck and a good start.
