Abstract |
The study concludes that their family names originate from many languages. Most are from Pali and Sanskrit or a combination of the two languages with Thai, followed by Thai, Arabic, Malay and others. The numbers of syllables range from two to seven, with two syllables the most, followed by three, four and five to seven respectively. Their meanings involve abstract and concrete properties and qualifications. Most are about kinship or lineage, followed by those indicating wholesomeness, peace and prophet-related names. The meanings least used for their surnames are related to occupations and beliefs, e.g., gods, spirits or dreams. There are three categories of family names of these Muslim-Thais: original names since the Family Name Act was enforced, new names, and names derived from the original ones with traces of similar sounds or meanings. The family names of this group reflect four types of social values; Islamic belief, superstitious belief, family relationships, and relationships with the environment or with nature.
