Abstract |
The thesis investigates the Karen refugee camp on the Thai-Burmese border at Mae Sot District as regards to the opinions of involved state officials, military personnel and local civilians about its impacts on the Thai socio-economic and political situation. It is found that they accept that the camp should be set up temporarily on humanitarian grounds and when the situation in Burma calms down, the refugees should be repatriated. They do not accept the idea of moving the camp inland ten kilometers from the border, due to the issue of the security of local residents if the camp was attacked.
