Abstract |
The Karen at Mae La Refugee Camp began to form their ethnic history when Burma was under British rule. After Burma gained independence form Britain, many Karen factions began fighting with the Burmese army, causing an influx of refugees along the Thai-Burmese border. Many smaller camps were burnt down by both Burmese soldiers and Buddhist Karen. Thai authorities have gathered these fleeing refugees at the Mae La Camp for ease of supervision.
