Abstract

The work analyzes Sukhwan verses in the socio-cultural contexts of the ethnic group by using textual and oral data. It is found that the Sukhwan ritual has been carried out for a long time, with the soul shaman conducting the ritual. Qualifications for a shaman include being a male of the age of over 35 years who has been ordained as a monk for a long period of time and is keen on conducting the ritual. Contents of the verses are divided into three types depending on ritual categories: rite of passage, spirit appeasement, or sickness. The verses play the roles of education, aesthetics, cultural completeness and empowerment, community unity, and are a tool to regulate and preserve community norms. In terms of cultural assimilation, the ritual has four types of cultural assimilation, namely, language, belief, inter-ethnic marriage, and ritual traditions. There are five factors affecting their cultural assimilation. They include a similarity in beliefs and values, ethnic similarity, occupation similarity, developments (education, administration, transportation and telecommunication), and inter-ethnic marriage.
