Abstract |
The house construction of the Phuthai ethnic group is related to natural conditions and the livelihood of household members. From investigating the house construction characteristics of six Phuthai communities, it is found that house construction-related beliefs are similar. For instance, the shadows of the house construction-related beliefs are similar. The shadow of the house must not fall over a rice barn so as to prevent rice from becoming moldy. Praying rooms where Buddha images and the ashes of ancestors are kept are exclusively for sons to sleep in. Rooms for daughters are close to the kitchen. Due to socio-economic and environmental changes, these conventional beliefs are gradually disappearing.
