Abstract |
This work analyzes the intergroup and intragroup relations of the Moken in the Surin Archipelago, based on the Interdependent Model. The ethnic group does not depend only on a self-sufficient economy but also on trade with outsiders. These contemporary opportunistic foragers are flexible and adaptive to economic strategies. The model has two drawbacks when applied to the Moken. The relations of these opportunistic foragers are not defined by interdependency, because middlemen usually create conditions to bind the ethnic group. Furthermore, the self-sufficient economy plays an important role in maintaining the cultural identity and freedom of the ethnic group. In general, the relations are defined by sharing voluntarily and creating other subsystems that influence one another.
