Abstract |
The Black Karen or Tong Su do not generally consider themselves as a Karen tribe despite speaking a Karen dialect. They tend to live in Shan and Khuen communities in Mae Hong Son Province. Originally, they resided around the Inle Lake in the Shan State in Burma. The group believes in animism and superstition. Corpses are buried rather than cremated. After one dies, it is believed that his/her soul will reside with those of their ancestors in Loi Mor Mountain. Their traditions are similar to those of the Bwe Karen.
