Abstract |
The settlements of the Akha are at a higher altitude than those of Lisu and Lahu. The Akha are animists and believe in ancestors’ spirits. Premarital sexual relationships are allowed. Sex trainers for both men and women are selected in a village. The Akha like to sing and dance to the accompaniment of the Khaen woodwind instrument. Lyrics are mostly about livelihood or loneliness. Black is the color of their traditional dress. Akha men have their heads shaved with top knots. It is believed that without top knots men could become deranged by spirits. Women wear short skirts with their lower legs wrapped in two pieces of cloth. The ethnic group cultivates rice, vegetables and opium. Opium is their cash crop and the group likes to consume dog meat.
