Abstract |
The report compares Phuthai culture in Phananikhom District with that of the So in Kusuman District, Sakon Nakhon Province, regarding history, beliefs, marriage, kinship system, sicknesses and healing, and funerals. Most cultural aspects of the two ethnic groups are similar. The difference is the belief in the spirits of the dead. The scattering of pop rice from the funeral home to the cemetery for the Phuthai means that the spirits of the dead will be taken to the world of eternal happiness. However, the So believe that the spirits were called back home to provide protection for family members.
