Abstract |
The investigation focuses on language use, language choice and attitude to language for inter and intra-group communication among Hmong, Khmu and Prai ethnic groups at Nam Sot Village, Thung Chang District, Nan Province. It is found that the Hmong use their ethnic language for intra-group communication the most, followed by the Khmu and then the Prai. As for inter-group communication, Standard Thai or the northern Thai dialect is used. Regarding language attitude, it is found that the Khmu feel embarrassed to use their native language in public and they want to assimilate culturally with the mainstream culture the most. The Hmong have more conflicts with other groups than the other two.
