Abstract |
The data from this report have been acquired from interviewing 1,020 Akha people living and working in Chiang Mai City. It is found that urban migration of the ethnic group is related to socio-economic, political and cultural changes due to highland development. Causes of migration are a lack of arable land, the low prices of produce, and needs for higher education and better social security. When they migrate to the city center, they have to adjust themselves to the urban lifestyle using formal and non-formal social capital to survive. Due to their low education levels, most end up in lowly paid and manual jobs. They live together in communities and meet one another on special occasions like in churches for Akha people.
