Abstract |
The thesis investigates agricultural practices, sustainability of the agricultural system, as well as problems and recommendations for engaging in sustainable agriculture of Mae Song Karen Community, Tambon Mae Song, Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province, with participation of community members. The investigation focused on rotating highland farming, wet rice plantation, raising livestock, and foraging for young bamboo shoots, Ho Ko So and edible roots. It was found that rice production yields were reduced when rain was scarce. Other crops were grown in rotating rice farms in order to provide sufficient nutrients for rice. Additionally, raising livestock brought about supplementary income when rice was not adequate for consumption. Foraging of forest products was another alternative of the villagers. In general, it was found that their farming system was sustainable based on diversity of their farming practices. When rice was insufficient, it was compensated by livestock and foraging for forest products (Abstract, pp. 230-231).
