Abstract |
This thesis explored popular values of the Mon in Bang Khunthian District, concerning birth, marriage, and migration as well as the relationship between the three variables with gender, marital status, education, career, age, and household income of the sample group. It was found that the number of males and females in the sample was similar. Almost all were Buddhists using Mon as a language of communication. On average, there were six members in a family and three of them were able to earn incomes. There was an average of five siblings from the same parents. The average ages of marriage were 24 for males and 21 for females. Over half of the sample group had completed primary education and were employees. They agreed on the idea of getting married older but disagreed on premarital sex. They also agreed on living in the same place permanently but were not sure about migration. Those of older age wanted to have many children or an extended family and did not agree on premarital sex. Those with high income wanted to get married at an older age and thought that decision making should be done by both husband and wife. Female respondents were bound to their birthplace and did not think migration would raise their economic status or living conditions. Those with higher education and income tended to migrate, believing that migration would improve their lives (pp. 128-140).
