Abstract |
The Rampha Khaosarn improvised singing of villagers in Pathumthani Province is a tradition with a long history, reflecting a simple way of rural and farming life. It is based on a belief in reincarnation, heaven and hell, longevity, faith, wishes, and merit making as well as social values on state employment, wealth, physical beauty, making merit, happiness, expensive materials, polygamy, the relationship between temple and village, social cooperation, and ethics. The language in the singing is direct, simple with rhyming, with repetition and metaphors. The use of intimate pronouns creates an atmosphere of camaraderie, praising donors as if they were elderly relatives. The singing is a part of the entertainment in the alms giving ceremony to 100 monks. The monks collect the alms by rowing boats. Entertainment and plays are organized a day after the end of Buddhist Lent until the middle of the twelfth lunar month.
