Abstract |
The two Karen villages were located on the Thai-Burmese border, susceptible to military invasion. Transportation was difficult because the villages were in the forest reserve area. They were very poor because they were not entitled to have land ownership titles. Public infrastructure was rudimentary. In respect to education, almost all of them were illiterate in Thai. In terms of public health, sanitation was lacking and villages had first-aid kits with insufficient medical products. Occupationally, they were engaged in backward farming practices and rice yields were not sufficient for consumption. Socially and criminally, it was found that there were physical violence and stealing. Regarding their customs, traditions and beliefs, they still practice animism. For environmental conservation, illegal logging was still ongoing. As for sports and recreation, the villagers were not interested in spending their free time productively. For educational planning and management for the two Karen communities, it was revealed that the non-formal education center of the district provided educational services and the Huay Muang Public Health Center provided public health services to community members. Occupationally, the district agricultural office provided career training. Socially and administratively, military officers provided training on security as well as forest and environmental conservation. Culturally, concerned state and private agencies were collaboratively involved. Results of these interventions revealed that those trainees were literate in Thai and were able to take care of their physical sanitation and cure their illnesses more effectively. For security, there were vigilantes providing security in their communities and border areas. Environmentally, reforestation was conducted and awareness on environmental conservation was raised. Socio-culturally, cultural transmission from older to younger generations was carried out. For sports and recreation, it was found that there was cooperation with state agencies. There was training on spiritual well being to create unity among youngsters.
