Abstract |
The book examines migration, customs, beliefs, rituals, habitation, and dress of Yao Mien and Yao Mun in China, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The Yao has their own ethnic identity expressed distinctively through their dresses and jewelry. Their customs and beliefs, such as paying homage to the spirits of their ancestors, play a significant role in their spiritual life but they also believe in Taoism. Additionally, the ethnic group has its own spoken language, the largest group speaking the Mien dialect, followed by the Mun dialect. Nevertheless, the two groups do not have a written language. Although the Yao has migrated to other countries like Thailand, Laos, USA, France, and Canada, they still continue to express and maintain their ethnic identity.
