Abstract |
The healthcare practices of the Sakai ethnic group has been influenced by various factors, be it geographical, socio-economic, cultural and external. When its nomadic subsistent lifestyle had changed, its healthcare-related beliefs changed accordingly. Traditionally, the belief in supernatural powers defined treatment methods, e.g., using magic or Sa Hose, or asking for forgiveness from supernatural beings. It was noted that its nomadic society had enabled the group to accumulate and transmit folk wisdom about using herbs for treatments and for family planning. After the socio-economic changes, the group was allocated landownership to settle permanently, the lifestyle of the group changed to their becoming laborers in rubber plantations for money. When the group was exposed to socio-cultural influence and to the lifestyle of Buddhist and Muslim Thais, its personal healthcare practices changed in order for them to get accepted by neighboring societies. The ethnic group began to take care of their personal hygiene and clothes. They knew how to use modern medicines in combination with herbs to heal sicknesses as well as to get access to state healthcare services. Sakai women received prenatal care and child delivery services from the hospital. Additionally, they received advice on how to use birth control pills and modern medicines from public health personnel.
