Abstract |
The thesis investigates physical aspects of Don Pu Ta forests in 19 villages of Nachuak District. It also studies the relationship and roles of the forests with people’s lifestyle, and rituals and their impacts on the communities. The author also conducted a survey of the forests and interviewed villagers about rituals and beliefs as well as their impacts on the communities (p. 7). The forests are thick deciduous forests varying in size. There are swampy in land with 3-4 Pu Ta shrines in each place. Villagers use the forests as a seasonal food source and a source for herbs. Appeasement rituals of the Pu Ta spirits are held on the sixth lunar month with Thao Jum as the ritual conductor. As for impacts on community, the forests provide a physical and spiritual refuge for community members along with their ancestors’ spirits which concern their livelihood and faith.
