Abstract |
The elderly in Lao Song community have status and roles in accordance with kin relationships. Furthermore, they have roles and close relationship with their culture and society regarding lifestyle, belief, customs, traditions, and rituals. As a seniority-oriented society with a belief in ancestor spirits, the elderly with experience, knowledge, and skills in maintaining traditions and in conducting rituals have a higher status than those who only have a role at the household level. In general, the elderly as household heads are a spiritual refuge of and give advice to young generations as well as transmit cultural knowledge and experience to them. Furthermore, they play a role in child rearing and help to lessen household burdens.
