Abstract |
The Khamu is an ethnic group living in the northern region for a long time and there are many branches of this ethnic group. Nowadays, the ethnic group can be found in Chiang Rai, Nan, Uthai Thani, and Kanchanaburi. The ethnic group practices rotation agriculture similar to what the Karen do. Ethnic wisdom is used to heal general sicknesses and those caused by what can be called supernatural powers. Their lifestyles have currently been changing due to external market forces and state pressures, obliging the Khamu at Huay Jor Village to produce for sale. Nevertheless, the villagers have tried to maintain their traditional production methods by producing for domestic consumption and growing kitchen vegetables for their food security. Additionally, the villagers have tended to favor modern medical treatments, but have not neglected traditional medical methods when modern medicine could not heal sicknesses. It is thus a combination between modern and ethnic medical practices.
