Abstract |
The Akha ethnic group has its ethnic wisdom in natural resource management and slash-and-burn farming practices. When the land was cultivated for three or five consecutive years, the land was left for rehabilitation. For land ownership, when the land was neglected, others were able to exploit it. The main crops were rice, corn and opium. At the present time, Akha farmers are unable to rehabilitate the land, so land is used intensively, bringing about soil infertility. For sickness treatment, the ethnic group uses both medicinal herbs and spiritual mediums, despite having more modern treatment alternatives and scarcity of medicinal herbs due to forest destruction and encroachment.
