Abstract |
The research findings revealed that the Chong community was settled at Thung Saphan Village over a hundred years ago and their ethnic identity as well as certain aspects of their culture and beliefs have still been maintained. The village school aimed to equip Chong students with basic knowledge for their careers because they could not afford secondary school education due to economic problems of their families. The transmission of knowledge on vocation, culture and traditions, religion and ethics, and beliefs was through non-formal education, and the family played a significant role in the transmission. Educational problems were that the school had practical problems to achieve the targets set by the state and school curriculum had not been adjusted to suit local conditions. For parents, they were unable to get involved in their children’s education because of economic reasons. The students wanted their school to focus on skill-oriented subjects and good habit formation by incorporating contents on Chong and the locality. For non-formal education, students wanted knowledge about healthcare and fruit cultivation for their careers. Moreover, students wanted to maintain their ethnic culture and traditions, such as wedding and farm merit making.
