Abstract |
The insecurity in life and property of the Lahu residing along the Thai-Burmese border is due to conflicts among armies of various ethnic groups. The revival of their socio-cultural symbolism and structure is an attempt to create their ethnic identity by differentiating themselves from powerful groups and other minority ethnic groups. The attempt is meant to raise their ethnic consciousness in order to create their ethnic solidarity amid conflicts between the Burmese army, the San State Liberation Army, and armies of other ethnic groups headquartered along the border.
