Abstract |
The article presents methods of how the Hmong use geomancy to explain conflicts over natural resource utilization and to explain bad incidents as a result of development. Symbols in geomantic discourse are also used to explain events and to express fear and frustration due to contacts with lowlanders, cash crop cultivation instead of opium, mining, and forestry that affect the conventional use of their resources. The author concludes that these geomantic discourses function as a resistance to change and emotional expressions, while real conflicts are portrayed in a different image in order to conceal what actually happens.
