Abstract |
It is found from the investigation that the Mons use Mon, Burmese, Thai, and English as well as a combination of these languages to construct their names. Females of the third age group have the most names in their ethnic language; while males of 45 years of age and over have Burmese names the most. Both males and females in the age range of one to ten have Thai names the most. In terms of structure, the names of those of 45 years and over have less complex word structure and fewer syllables than the names of those of younger ages. Their names indicate their ethnic values, beliefs and lifestyles. Most male names semantically signify patriotism and victory while the names of females are related to beauty. It is found that name changes are mostly due to social factors.
