Abstract |
It is found from the investigation that there are four reasons for having children among Hmong and Karen women. For economic and security reasons, having children means having manpower for housework and income generation. In addition, children can look after parents when they are old. For emotional reasons, children provide love, happiness and friendship to parents. For family reasons, children provide the continuity of family and traditions as well as inheritance. For self-development reasons, children provide motivation for parents to become successful in life. Factors influencing the decision to have children include age, number of existing children, family structure, economic status, education, and religion.
