Abstract |
The persons playing the most important role in the area of childcare for the Sea Gypsies are mothers and grandmothers. Children receive sufficient physical development by getting food and health care according to the mothers’ beliefs. They receive mental and emotional development through regular touching and holding. Folk media are also used for emotional stability. Social development is promoted through sharing, unifying and interacting with others. Intellectual development is promoted through learning the ethnic language, learning about nature and environs as well as using their imagination and creativity. Childcare-related factors for the Sea Gypsies according to the cultural ecology theory include geographical, family and kinship, economic, social, education, belief, and cultural.
