Abstract |
The study investigates housing characteristics, housing development, and housing problems of the Lahu ethnic group in the area under the supervision of the Doi Tung Development Project in order to devise a plan to solve the ethnic group’s housing problems. It is found that they have three types of housing characteristics, namely, conventional, applied and new two-storey. A kitchen and an additional bedroom may be added to the main house. A new house has a storage room as an addition and the housing structure is stronger and more permanent because of better financial conditions due to employment outside the community. Other taboos and practices concerning housing construction are still maintained. The study recommends that the policy on land use for housing construction should be revised. The distance of the house from the gate should be specified. Construction materials should be similar to the old ones instead of those available in the market in order to maintain the uniqueness of the community.
