Abstract |
This sea-going nomadic group calls itself “Masing” and is generally known as “New Thais”. The group resides in Thung Dap, Tha Pae Yoi, Koh Ra, and Pak Jok Villages. Although they live on the mainland, they have still maintained their traditional lifestyle, values, beliefs, and culture. Some influences of the local cultures are folk plays, dress and ornaments. Occupation-wise, men and women have distinct responsibilities. Men fish out in the sea while women collect shells and sea cucumbers. Their occupational problems include old fishing equipment, a lack of marketing power, and a lack of capital. In addition, they are financially wasteful and like to gamble, so there is little/no savings. For career enhancement, men would like to increase their fishing ability and women would like to develop a dried sea cucumber industry. The guidelines for occupational enhancement of this sea-going ethnic group include better fishing equipment, clean production methods, financial support in the form of a cooperative for encouraging savings, and the establishment of an occupation group or a women’s development group.
