Abstract |
Health care and treatments of sicknesses of the Akha and Lahu ethnic groups are based on their conventional beliefs, folk wisdom and a combination of folk and modern medication. Sicknesses are divided into two categories. Mental sicknesses cannot be clearly diagnosed. They are the actions of supernatural power. They must be healed by conducting appeasement rituals conducted by shamans. Physical sicknesses are clearly defined because symptoms are evident. Akha and Lahu folk healers sometimes use a holistic medical approach. They use herbal medicine, magic and also use modern medication provided by public health volunteers, public health centers and hospitals.
