Abstract |
The research findings reveal that the production system of Karen households is an integrated one that depends on natural resources. Their incomes are mostly from selling livestock. Therefore, there is no forest encroachment for commercial agriculture. There is also no need to use environmentally detrimental chemicals. Their traditions have long been maintained because they believe that all things in the world are interrelated. They lead a self-sufficient lifestyle. In addition, their animistic beliefs and taboos contribute to their respect of nature, which are expressed through rituals.
