Abstract |
The report investigates four historical canal and road construction events concerning Ban Khrua Muslim Community. The first incident was the digging of the Saen Saep Tai Canal during the reign of King Rama I. The operation had to avoid the community, its mosque and its cemetery. The second event was the construction of Banthat Thong Road during the reign of King Rama VII in 1930. The plan was to go through the community’s mosque and cemetery, but it was suspended for 30 years. The third event was the revival of the plan during the Sarit Thanarat government. The construction took place from 1958 to 1963. The road split the community into two halves but avoided the mosque and the cemetery. The fourth event was the construction of the CD Road Expressway from 1988 to the present (2002). However, the plan has not been completed due to fierce resistance from the community.
