Abstract |
Khmer society in 1936 was rustic and rural and occupations of people were related to natural resources. Rice was the mainstay. Women’s status was lower than that of men’s. Young girls had to obey their parents and premarital relationships were forbidden. Education was not affordable by the majority. Older women chewed betel nuts and observed the precepts on Buddhist holidays. People with ethics and knowledge were honored. Marriage was arranged by parents. As for funerals, a crocodile banner was placed in front of the coffin and sad music called ‘Thamming’ was played. Their beliefs were a mixture of Buddhism, animism and Brahmanism.
