Abstract |
The evacuation of 17 Hmong villages from the Thung Yai Naresuan and Um Phang Wildlife Reserves in Um Phang District to an area in Phop Phra District has obliged the new and original Hmongs to adjust themselves to their new living conditions. They have to grow crops for commercial purposes instead of for subsistence. Being exposed to urban culture has changed their conventional traditions, causing more political and administrative conflicts and competition. The most serious problem is drugs, resulting in there being more orphans because their parents are arrested or killed. The operations under the state development projects have brought about good and bad things to the Hmong culture. It is suggested that state development projects take the traditions, culture and folk wisdom of the Hmong into consideration and that the ethnic group should participate in all steps in the operation of the projects.
