Abstract |
The research focuses on the opinions of provincial Islam council members on the problems in the three southern border provinces and guidelines to their solution. The data were collected by using questionnaires and interviews. Regarding state assistance and local development, most samples believed that they were not sufficient, and they needed state help in three areas: infrastructure, the economy and social issues. They also believed that the economic status of local people had not been improved. Concerning problem causes, they noted that the main cause was government officials, followed by economic and educational problems. Causes of local people’s grievances included robbers, state officials, communists, burglars, and drug addicts. The council members believed that the general qualifications of state officials were good, but what needed to be improved was their honesty, devotion to the public, sense of justice, and sincerity to people. Recommendations for solving the problems included the improvements in the qualities of state officials, in the infrastructure, socio-economic structure, in access to state services, and in the administration of local state agencies.
