Abstract |
A back-strap loom has been used for weaving for generations by the Lawa ethnic group. Threads are both home-spun and commercially available. Dies are both natural and chemical. In the past, weaving was for household consumption and for rituals. Nowadays, it can be made for sale to earn a supplementary income. In general, weaving is done in free time from daily work. There are only two weaving designs. The first design is formed by knot-tying, which requires special expertise to weave. The second one is a diamond design, which is used at funerals. It is believed that this is the influence of the Mahayana Buddhism.
