Abstract |
It is found that, in villages located distant from the city center, traditional practices about sexual relationships are still maintained, e.g., premarital sex, underage sex and polygamy, which are favorable to the spread of AIDS. In villages located closer to the city center, there have been cultural changes on the issues. Villagers are more educated, are more aware of the importance of having steady partners of the opposite sex, and receive more information on how to prevent the disease. Besides village location and culture, collective community consciousness and illegal activities (drugs, prostitution and begging) are related to the spread of the disease. To solve the problems, mobile public relations units should provide the communities with knowledge of the disease via different media, with the focus on prevention and counseling.
