Abstract |
Tharae Community was established in 1884 by a group of Catholic Vietnamese. Later on, more Vietnamese migrated there together with some local people. Initially, there were huts and one-storey wooden houses. More two-storey brick houses were later built by merchants to display their ware and their economic status. Brick houses with French architecture are unique to the community. The houses are decorated with arches and bras reliefs as well as figurines of saints on altars in the living room. The architecture is of French influence via Vietnamese architects with a background of French architectural knowledge background. Furthermore, French priests also provide support and consultancy on house construction with French designs.
