Abstract

The evolution of So textiles is divided into four periods. The first period was when the ethnic group resided in the highlands of Laos. They did not yet know how to weave but bartered their farming produce for clothes from Laotians. So men wore loin cloths to cover their sex organs while So women wore sarongs with front split blouses. The second period was about 50-100 years ago when the group learned how to weave from others they were in trade contact with. The third period was about 30-50 years ago. The designs were fully developed and people wore homemade clothes. The last period is the present when they buy ready-made clothes from the market. Designs of So textiles are influenced by nature, religion, shapes, and a combination of the three. So textiles are used in daily life and in rituals, which are divided into religious and funeral rituals. Problems of So textiles include low quality, a lack of capital, and young generations turning their back to this traditional activity.
